“My mother has carefully archived our annual family Christmas pictures. Open the album cover – the first image is from 1969, my older sister is a brand new baby held by my parents. Keep flipping and you’ll see our family transform over 38 years! Until the last picture, 12 of us – my parents, siblings, their spouses and the next generation all together at a family wedding. But, if my mother is nearby, she will surely say some version of the following, “Those pictures are a prized possession but, in all those years, we’ve never taken a picture without someone shedding tears!” And, she’s right, it’s true. Somehow the portrait-making process always caused enough frustration that one of us broke down. When I became a mom I knew two things: I would continue the tradition of an annual family Christmas portrait, and, I would try my hardest to make it an experience that was not tear-provoking – maybe even fun???
